Connection FAQs

The DataBak Backup Client by default uses your normal internet connection, whether this be a Dial-Up/Broadband/ADSL modem or your LAN connection and normaly no configuration is required. It can also be configured to use a specific modem if required. The usual reason for the the Backup client not connecting when you first install the software is your firewall.
For step by step details on configuring the Backup Client connection, click here.
Firewall Information
Firewall's can be implemented in several ways. If you have a firewall, you will need to configure it and/or the Backup Client software to allow inbound and outbound transmission. How you do that depends on the type of firewall that you have. Generally this will involve adding one or more 'Rules' to the firewall to enable communication between the Backup Client software and our Data Centre.
Packet filtering Firewall
Arguably the most common type of firewall in use today uses 'Packet filtering'.
1. Add a rule to permit TCP/IP outbound on port 308 and optionaly to the Backup Servers IP address (see below).
2. Your firewall my explicitly require permission for the inbound response packets to come back, do so by adding a rule permitting TCP/IP inbound to ports 1024-5000 (also know as a 'Dynamic' port range) and optionaly from the Backup Servers IP address (see below), for an already-established connection.
SOCKS proxy firewall
In the DataBak software, provide your firewall's IP address and the port to use to connect to the firewall. That's it, you do not need to reconfigure your firewall.
Non-SOCKS-compliant firewall
You will need to configure both the DataBak software and your firewall. Contact your firewall administrator for assistance. Read our detailed firewall information.
Detailed Firewall Information
Protocols:
Only TCP/IP is used. No other protocals are used.
Backup Server IP address:
Each Backup Client is assigned a specific backup server. Enter the Customer Area and view the details for the appropriate Backup Client.
Port Numbers:
The Backup Client software always establishes an outbound TCP/IP session with port 308 on the DataBak backup servers and receives inbound reponse packets from the DataBak servers on ports 1024-5000 (also know as a 'Dynamic' port range). The inbound port will dynamically change from connection to connection.
DNS:
The Backup Client software can connect to our servers using either a FQDN (eg srvr04.databak.com) or an IP address. Therefore, name resolution (and therefore access to a name server) is not required.
Microsoft ISA 2000 Firewall or Small Business Server 2000
If the Backup Client is installed on a compter inside the firewall then ensure the ISA Firewall client is installed and enabled on that computer. You will need to add a Packet filter to ISA 2000.
If the Backup Client is installed on the server with ISA 2000 or SBS 2000 installed then the Firewall Client should not installed (do not try to install it!). All you need to do is add a Packet filter to ISA 2000.
How to add a Packet Filter to ISA Server
- Select Start, Programs, Microsoft ISA Server, ISA Management
- Expand Servers and Arrays
- Expand the server (e.g. MYSERVER)
- Expand Access Policy
- Right click on IP Packet Filters and select View then TaskPad
- Click Create a Packet Filter
- In the IP Packet Filter name enter "DataBak Client" and click Next
- Select Allow packet transmission and click Next
- Select Custom and click Next
- Change IP protocol Direction "Outbound", Local Port to "Dynamic", Remote port, "Fixed Port" and Port number to "308" and click Next
- Select Apply this packet filter to Default IP address and click Next
- Select Apply this packet filter to All remote computers and click Next Click
- Finish
